How to get a Traffic Register Number (TRN) in South Africa
Foreign nationals with out the South African ID Card and would like to obtain your Drivers License in South Africa, or have a foreign license and would like to purchase a motor vehicle need a Traffic Register Number (TRN) in South Africa.This number is the main identification accepted for road traffic transactions on the National Transport Information System (eNaTIS) system for foreigners.
How to apply for a Traffic Register Number
- Go to the appropriate registering authority or driving licence testing centre and complete form ANR (Application and Notice in respect of Traffic Register Number).
- If you are applying for traffic register number as a foreigner who wants to buy or register a motor vehicle in South Africa, you must submit the following documents:
- Certified copy of your passport and a certified copy or your temporary residence permit
- Your foreign identity document
- Two ID photographs (Black and white). You must confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require taking photographs.
- Invitation letter from your employer or school (they will not help you without this!)
- Proof of residence (e.g. utility bill). If the proof of residence is not in your name because you are renting from someone, get a letter from them stating their full name, ID number and date of birth and that you (full name, passport number and date of birth) are their tenant.
- Prescribed fee (free in Johannesburg, possibly elsewhere)
- If you are applying for a traffic register number because you want to personalise the number plate of a vehicle owned by your organisation, you must submit the following:
- The business registration certificate (issued by the registrar of companies) and
- Copy of the proxy or representative’s South African ID
- Prescribed fee.
